Regional BBQ Styles

By

You like your ribs pork with a dry rub instead of a sauce. Then you’re probably a Memphis-style BBQ enthusiast.

Or maybe you like any and all kinds of meat cooked slow and low over hickory wood. If burnt ends are your favorite, then Kansas City-style barbecue is for you.

Isn’t it great that even in the category of barbecue we’ve got sub-categories depending on your taste? I love America!

Want to know about all the different regional styles of BBQ this National Barbecue Month? Check out this rundown of the various flavors across the nation.

I know that there’s NO WAY I could choose just one style to be loyal to, I’m afraid. I like ‘em all. How about you?

Enjoy!

Cinco Beef-Inspired Recipes for Cinco de Mayo

By

Oh, how I love special days that allow me to focus on food! Beef, in particular.

As you know, I’m kind of obsessed.

So, the fact that Cinco de Mayo is coming up gives me great joy. I can dream up all kinds of beefy delights for that day.

AND, it’s my son’s birthday! We always get to celebrate doubly in spicy style!

The fifth of May, 1862, is when the Mexican army was victorious over the French in the Battle of Puebla and now it’s become a day to celebrate Mexican heritage and pride.

So in honor of Cinco de Mayo I give you cinco recipes you can use to celebrate, too!

UNO:  Delicious, nutritious steak fajitas (above). I mean, who doesn’t love steak fajitas? This recipe calls for Kansas City strip steaks sliced up good!

DOSCumin marinated flank steak. A special twist to give your flank steak some zing!

TRESCarne asada. A classic.

CUATROFlat iron steak tacos. I love the heartiness of the flat iron beef. Yum!

CINCO:  Flavorful, colorful pico burgers. Try ‘em and this may just become your go-to burger from now on. Use Wagyu Kobe beef and you’ll be hooked!

Fire up the grill, it’s summer! (At least it is in my mind.)

Try cooking something you’ve never tried before. Like steak with a chimichurri sauce (doesn’t that look yummy????).

Or a simple beef kebab with assorted veggies – or even fruit!

Working Mother has some great grilling ideas for us to try and conquer this summer. Check them out here. And while the grilling part is fun, the eating part is more fun!

So, go – grill to your heart’s content!

Sauce Your Burger Like the Pros

We’ve talked about how a sauce can make or break a steak.

Well, the same goes for a great burger. Naturally!

Famous restaurants are KNOWN for their burger sauces. So why not replicate them at home?

The Daily Meal has the 411 on some well-known sauces so you can do just that. Check out their recipes for Big Mac Sauce and more!

Stay on your patio and enjoy all the flavor of the restaurant down the street. Sounds perfect to me!

Meaty 12-12-12!

By

Okay, it’s 12-12-12 and you know how we celebrate everything in my house, right?

Steak!

But, let’s come up with some creative ways to do this every-100-years thing right! Invite some people over, then try these festive ideas:

1. Serve 12 different cuts of steak – come on, you can do it!

2. Combine 12 cool spices and create an awesome rub for your roast.

3. Easy. Just invite 12 friends to eat steak. Boom.

4. Everyone gets a 12-ounce ribeye.

5. Serve whatever steak you want, but then go around the table and collectively come up with 12 things you’re thankful for.

6. Ask a 12-year-old to recite the “12 Days of Christmas” while you eat your steak.

And if you’re celebrating Hanukkah on this spectacular day, you’ve totally got this celebration thing under control.

Okay, now you come up with the next 6 to make 12 cool things to do on this awesome day. I need a 12-minute breather.

It’s amazing how something that had nothing to do with steak turns into a steak-related holiday in my mind.

Really, aren’t all special days steak-related in some way?

Happy 12-12-12, everyone!
